I Found an Ammonite Fossil アンモナイト 化石採集しました
For the first time in a year, I went out fossil collecting. 1年ぶりに化石採集に行ってきました。
I joined a geological field excursion and, with guidance from more experienced members, I was finally able to collect the ammonite fossil I had always dreamed of finding. 地学巡検に参加して、先輩方から教えてもらい、念願のアンモナイト化石を取ることができました。

I was told it was a Canadoceras, so when I got home I looked it up. キャナドセラスだよと教えてもらい、帰宅後に調べてみました。
It turns out that Canadoceras lived during the Campanian age of the Cretaceous period.

キャナドセラスは白亜紀カンパニアン期に生息したものだそうです。

Canadoceras is apparently quite rare, and this one is the largest specimen I have ever collected. キャナドセラスは珍しいものだそうで、大きさも今まで自分が取った中で最大です。
I washed off the mud and applied a diluted solution of bond (adhesive) to preserve it. 泥を落とし、保存のためボンドを薄めた液を塗ります。

The suture lines are intricate and beautiful. 縫合線が複雑で美しい。

The week after collecting it, I was hit with terrible muscle soreness — and a toothache on top of that, which made things really rough. 採集した翌週は、筋肉痛がひどく、歯痛も重なって辛かった。

To enjoy fossil collecting, you really do need to keep yourself in shape on a regular basis. 採集を楽しむためには、普段からの体力作りが必要ですね。

Key Vocabulary · 重要語句

3 Words to Remember from This Article

WORD 01   excursion  /  遠足・巡検・小旅行

Meaning: A short trip taken for a specific purpose, often for education or exploration. In this article, it describes a geological field excursion — an outing to study rocks and fossils in the field.

"I joined a geological field excursion."
→ 「地学巡検に参加しました。」

Usage tip: Excursion sounds more purposeful and organized than a simple "trip." You might say "a school excursion," "a hiking excursion," or "a day excursion to the coast."

WORD 02   specimen  /  標本・採集品

Meaning: An individual example of something, especially one collected for study or display. Scientists and collectors use this word for fossils, minerals, plants, and animals.

"This one is the largest specimen I have ever collected."
→ 「大きさも今まで自分が取った中で最大です。」

Usage tip: Specimen is common in science and hobby contexts. "A fossil specimen," "a museum specimen," "a fine specimen of quartz." The plural is specimens.

WORD 03   suture line  /  縫合線

Meaning: In ammonite fossils, suture lines are the intricate patterns visible on the shell's surface, formed where the inner walls of the shell met the outer shell. They are one of the most beautiful and scientifically important features of ammonites.

"The suture lines are intricate and beautiful."
→ 「縫合線が複雑で美しい。」

Usage tip: Suture(縫合)originally means a stitch or seam — like the stitches used in surgery. In geology, it refers to the line where two sections meet. Intricate(複雑な・精巧な)means detailed and complex in a beautiful way — a useful word to remember alongside it.
